Can I be fined for speeding if there are no signs?

Yes.

There does not need to be signs warning of speed cameras to be caught speeding.

Speed limits can also sometimes be detected without speed limit signs.

Street lighting and buildings on a road, for instance, indicates a limit of 30mph unless otherwise stated.

Dual carriageways and motorways have a 70mph limit.

But vehicles other than conventional cars may also have a lower speed limit that the one shown on a sign.

A car with a trailer, for instance, can only travel at 60mph on a dual carriageway or motorway.

These limits are not always signposted but drivers still need to know and obey them or face being fined.

How much is a speeding fine?

The minimum speeding fine is £100 and three penalty points.

Drivers can be disqualified if they have 12 or more points within three years.

If you go to court and plead guilty, you will pay the £100 unless given the option to attend a speed awareness course.

If you plead not guilty but are found to have been speeding, you could pay up to £1,000.

The maximum fine is £2,500 if caught speeding on a motorway.

But offenders can be charged up to 175 per cent of their weekly income, on a sliding scale depending on the severity of the offence.

50mph – Driving 76mph or more

60mph – Driving 91mph or more

70mph – Driving 101mph or more

How do I know if I’ve been caught speeding?

A speed camera may flash if it has caught you speeding, although not all of them do.

But within two weeks of being caught, and usually after five working days, drivers will receive the fixed penalty notice through their door.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA, previously told The Sun: “The only way drivers can be certain they have been caught speeding is when a ticket is put through the letterbox.”

He added: “Speed cameras are digital so no longer use film and not all of them flash when a speeding car has passed it.

“So there are sometimes no immediate signs that someone has been caught.”
