Calvin and Hobbes Viral Comic Ponders If They Are Worthy of Thor’s Hammer

A viral comic strip shows what would happen if Calvin and Hobbes were to test their worthiness at wielding Thor’s mighty hammer.

Cartoonist Lar DeSouza took advantage of a recent viral question that had been all over social media last week (including on CBR’s Facebook page on Thursday morning and on Entertainment Earth’s Twitter page later on Thursday) about the relative worthiness of other fictional characters to wield Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, by producing a viral comic strip showing what happened when Calvin and Hobbes tried to lift the famous hammer.

The viral question of “What character do you think would be worthy of wielding Mjolnir?” led to many spirited debates about characters from very different universes, like the Peanuts universe and, of course, the world of Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes, about a young boy and his stuffed toy tiger that he imagines to be an andromorphic tiger named Hobbes (the comic strip ran for ten years from 1985 through 1995).

DeSouza is a comic strip artist best known for his work on the two long-running online comic strips, “Looking For Group” and the comic “Least I Could Do”. Typically this involves comic strip characters like the Peanuts gang or Calvin and Hobbes (one of his most popular pieces is seeing Charlie Brown celebrate the Star Wars Christmas equivalent, Life Day).

Well, this past Saturday, DeSouza wrote on his Facebook account, “After some recent Twitter discussions about worthiness of non Marvel characters, this idea occurred to me.” He then shared the following comic, drawn in the style of Bill Watterson…

Naturally, the overly aggressive Calvin finds himself unable to lift Thor’s hammer, but when Calvin walks away angrily, his much more laid back companion, Hobbes, calmly lifts Thor’s hammer and transforms into a version of Thor and flies away.

Following the terrific response that DeSouza received from the initial piece, he couldn’t help but turn his mash-up skills towards depicting Hobbes as Thor and Calvin as Loki…

That mash-up was popular enough that he did a second one on the following day…

Amusingly, the recent Loki series actually had a specific Calvin and Hobbes callback itself, with the gum used in the series being named after an old Calvin and Hobbes strip…
