Call The Midwife: Who played Lionel Corbett and who died in the train crash?
Call The Midwife aired a devastating train crash last week and the aftermath played out this evening, which saw two characters die in a heartbreaking conclusion.
Ahead of the latest season airing on the BBC, the cast warned of a devastating incident that would leave Nonnatus House changed forever.
Last week, this came to air in the form of the collision, as a train travelling some of the fans’ favourite characters veered off the tracks in dramatic scenes.
Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) were both left in a bad way at the end of the previous instalment, as they remained trapped in the wreckage.
However, tonight’s episode saw more upset as two characters were confirmed dead as a result: train driver Lionel Corbett (Marc Elliott) and fellow passenger Dorothy Carnie (Stephanie Jacob).
Here’s all you need to know about the train crash which left the residents of Poplar in shock.
Who died in the Call the Midwife train crash?
Nurse Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack) was onboard the train when it was driven out of control, but she managed to quickly make it safely off the vehicle.
However, with the fate of Dr Turner and Sister Julienne left in question last week, fans were worried they would meet a devastating end tonight.
Luckily, they were pulled to safety when Timothy Turner (Max Macmillan) alerted the emergency services to their whereabouts as he realised there were still passengers stuck on the train.
Despite their injuries, the pair managed to survive after they were rushed to hospital – but not everyone was so fortunate.
Train driver Lionel was the first person to be confirmed dead in the crash, after he suffered from a seizure whilst driving the train.
It was later revealed to his wife Edina (Maya Saroya) – who had just given birth – that instead of being a reckless driver, he was actually very unwell and suffering from a brain tumour.
Elsewhere, passenger Dorothy lost her life shortly after the crash. She was consoled by Sister Julienne and Dr Turner in her final moments in very emotional scenes indeed.
Who is actor Marc Elliott who played Lionel Corbett?
Actor Marc will be a familiar face to fans of BBC drama, as he has appeared in both EastEnders and Holby City.
He is best known for his role as Syed Masood, who he played between 2009 and 2012.
The character was known for making history as he was a gay Muslim struggling with his sexuality, eventually tying the knot with boyfriend Christian (John Partridge).
Marc went on to portray evil Isaac Mayfield in Holby City from 2016 to 2019, who made popular character Dominic Copeland’s (David Ames) life hell, in a harrowing abuse storyline.
Elsewhere, Marc has appeared in Midsomer Murders, The Bill and Lewis.
Call The Midwife can be streamed in full on BBC iPlayer now.
