Calcutta HC orders DNA test of deceased BJP worker Avijit Sarkar
Biswajit Sarkar, brother of deceased BJP worker Avijit Sarkar, on Tuesday urged the court for a DNA test of his deceased brother and informed the court that his brother’s body has been damaged by maggots in the morgue. On July 2, the Calcutta HC had ordered a second autopsy at Command Hospital.
Advocate Priyanka Tibrewal, who is representing many victims of post-poll violence, filed a supplementary affidavit seeking DNA test to identify the body of Sarkar. Sarkar was allegedly strangled to death by a mob in Narkeldanga area of Kolkata on May 2, the day the assembly poll results were declared.
Tibrewal told the court on Tuesday that members of Sarkar’s family could not identify the body. The court said that DNA samples from the corpse should be matched with the DNA of Biswajit Sarkar.
The Bengal government informed the court that the family did not cooperate with the cops with regard to the second autopsy. Advocate General Kishor Dutta said several attempts were made to record their statements. Meanwhile, the seven-member NHRC committee that is investigating the post-poll violence in West Bengal submitted the final report on Tuesday in sealed boxes to the Calcutta High Court. The interim report was submitted on July 1, which was also a sealed report.
