CA staggers legend as Langer drama rages
Former Test captain Ian Chappell says he doesn’t know why Cricket Australia is “jumping up and down about a new coach”, as friction continues to build between the governing body and Justin Langer.
“The coach,” Chappell reasons, “makes very little difference.”
According to Fox Sports, the intense relationship between Langer and CA escalated at a three-way meeting last Friday, in which the 105-Test great was told he may have to reapply for his position.
Langer, who’s current contract will run out in June, reportedly fumed at the suggestion and expressed the view that he wouldn’t reapply and was deserving of a new deal spanning multiple years.

But that report was followed by an extraordinary CA statement.
“While we do not comment on confidential conversations, we felt on this occasion it was important to correct the record,” the CA statement reads.
“Among other false claims, we reject outright the assertion that the meeting was fiery or heated and that Justin was asked to reapply for his job.”
Chappell is staggered at Cricket Australia’s fascination with the coaching position.
“It’s what the players do under the captain, and I think they’ve got a very good skipper in Pat Cummins, as long as he runs the show,” 2GB’s Wide World of Sports radio.
“If they have some problems along the way get people in to talk about them, to me that’s the only feasible way to run a cricket team.
“I think it’s a system that can’t work properly.
“But I’d be looking to spend a hell of a lot more money on getting the right selectors, rather than worry about the coach.”
Former national skipper Mark Taylor speculated on WWOS radio on Monday whether the repair job Langer had been hired to do after the ball-tampering affair was complete and the governing body no longer needed him.
Cummins was instated as Australia’s 47th men’s Test captain after Tim Paine left his post due to a sexting scandal.
