Bust-up between teammates created ‘a bit of tension’

National Trans Am Series leader James Moffat says the awkward bingle between Trans Am stablemates created “a bit of tension” inside Garry Rogers Motorsport.

After starting from the rear of the field, the son of four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Allan Moffat was charging through when his teammates came together.

Owen Kelly was trying to get by Nash Morris when the race leader baulked through the MG hairpin.

The trailing Eden Thornburrow got into the back of Kelly and pushed him out of the corner and into a spin.

That sent Kelly into the tyre barrier and did enough damage to his Ford Mustang that he failed to finish.

Thornburrow was dealt a 30-second penalty for the incident and lost his podium finish as a result, dropping him from second to 13th.

After Kelly suggested a “black eye” might be forthcoming for Thornburrow on the Stan Sport broadcast, Wide World of Sports understands Kelly offered Thornburrow a slew of terse words.

“I obviously didn’t see the incident unfold in the race,” said Moffat.

Trans Am villain spun out by teammate

“I did see Owen pointing backwards at MG but I was, obviously after that second race on Sunday, just happy to get back on the podium having come from 17th.

“I walked back into the garage and there was a bit of tension there. I had to ask a couple of the boys what was going on.

“I obviously saw the replays after the race. Eden was obviously fighting for position. He hasn’t had a podium in Trans Am before.

“He was keen, Owen was in amongst it, and sometimes these things happen, and invariably when there is an incident like that there’s one person who’s more unhappy than one of the others.

“I was just happy not to be involved in it. I had nothing to do with it. I think those two guys will work it out.”

Moffatt leads on 310 points ahead of Garry Rogers Motorsport teammate Lochie Dalton on 279 points while Dream Racing’s Josh Webster sits third with 263 points.

The National Trans Am Series returns at Winton Motor Raceway on June 9-11 for the fourth round of SpeedSeries.
