Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Fan-Favorite Romance Could Save the World

A classic Buffy-Verse character has stepped back into the Slayer’s life, and their fiery romance could be what convinces her to save the world all over again.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Buffy the Laster Vampire Slayer #3, available now from Boom! Studios.

Buffy Summers has never been a stranger to staring down the end of the world, even if she never expected to live through it. In the world of Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, the titular hero has survived a vampire apocalypse she could not stop, and she has done so largely on her own. Thankfully, a familiar face has returned to make her stay at the end of the world a little less lonely. Not only has Spike finally stepped back into Buffy’s life, he’s brought back the kind of passion that might just save the entire world.

When Buffy decided to bring the young Slayer Thessaly to the Watchers for safekeeping, she couldn’t have imagined that the same Council which was so valuable in her early years would have fallen to the side of evil. Luckily, both Slayers were saved by the timely intervention of a new breed of Watchers, brought together and trained by none other than Buffy’s longtime vampire nemesis-turned-ally Spike. No matter how long they have been apart, Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #3 (by Casey Gilly, Joe Jaro, Joana Lafuente, and Ed Dukeshire) makes it clear that time hasn’t made them any less fond of one another. In fact, a little bit of burning romance could be just what Buffy needs to get back on her feet when the world is at its end.

First introduced in the second season episode “School Hard” of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series, Spike (portrayed by James Marsters) was born as William Pratt in the mid to late 1800s. A failed yet well-known romantic poet, William soon found his true calling after being turned into a vampire. Together with Angel and Drusilla, Spike terrorized Europe for more than a century before coming to Sunnydale and stepping into Buffy’s life. After a long and winding career as a villain, Spike would be forcefully reformed by the Initiative before eventually realizing that he had fallen in love with the titular Slayer somewhere along the way. Spike even gave his life defending Buffy, as well as the rest of the world, and while he was soon enough brought back as a vampire once more, he never lost his heroic streak nor his affinity for his first true enemy.

Now it looks like Spike has inadvertently brought a whole lot of emotions flooding back to the surface of Buffy herself, though that is hardly the worst thing that could happen. Buffy has become nothing if not detached in the time since the sun went dark and vampires rose to power. Despite her frequent enough meetings with Anya, Buffy still doesn’t have the kind of relationships which were always integral to both her story and personality. Compartmentalizing every single thing in her life for years hasn’t made Buffy any more lethal, nor has it helped drive her to do anything about the state of the world besides surviving it. Apart from Spike and his Watchers doing so much of the heavy lifting in that regard already, the fact that there is still someone who believes in her so completely may be the thing that finally gets Buffy to put her own life back on the line.

Even if Spike and Buffy never really got the chance to be together in the original series beyond a short-lived affair, there is no question that the very same intensity they had back then is still very much alive in the bleak future they inhabit. Of course, Spike would not be the first vampire with a soul to set Buffy’s heart aflutter. Considering how dispassionate she has become in the world of Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, any sort of burning is exactly what she needs right now, especially if it’s the sort that turns vampires into dust.
