Bruce Willis’ wife breaks down in tears over star’s ‘speech dwindling’

Emma Heming Willis, 44, took to Instagram with a candid video as she opened up on the heartbreaking toll her husband Bruce Willis’, 68, frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is taking on them both as a couple.

The model fought back tears as she spoke about what it’s like to witness a loved one’s “comprehension, and their speech, and all of that just, kind of, dwindle before your eyes”.

Speaking to her 821,000 followers about the Die Hard actor’s plight, Emma began by saying: “I just want to tap into the human side of this when it comes to communicating with someone living with dementia.

“Now, from the standpoint of the person watching their person, and their comprehension, and their speech, and all of that just, kind of, dwindle before your eyes is so loaded.”

Struggling to speak through her emotions, Emma trailed off as her eyes welled up with tears.

She added: “There is… I can’t even talk about it without wanting to cry.”

After composing herself, Emma continued: “Okay, so the point is that, what I’m trying to bring to the table is just education.

“And I’m learning with you and, you know, we can get all the tips and the tricks, and do what we can, and do our best, which is what we want to do for the person that we are caring for.

“But it doesn’t take away… Oh my God, I’m going to pull it together,” Emma tearfully insisted.

She then concluded whilst apologising for her emotional state: “But it doesn’t take away the feelings behind it.

“So, I just want you to know I see you. I understand how hard it is to watch.

“Sorry, I just wanted to let you know I’m here trying to bring some education, but there is a side of it that’s very loaded.”

It comes after Hollywood icon Bruce retired from acting last year after revealing his aphasia diagnosis.

The disorder affects the part of the brain that processes language and is usually seen in those who have experienced strokes or brain trauma.

As a result, aphasia sufferers often struggle with both language and memory, two essential parts of acting work.

However, shortly after Valentine’s Day this year, the “ladies of Willis/Moore”, namely Emma, Bruce’s ex-wife Demi Moore, and the former couple’s daughters; Scout, Rumer, and their younger sister Tallulah, all shared the same heartbreaking update.

The statement read: “We wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing.

“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD).

“Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”
