Browns’ Perrion Winfrey arrested after allegedly assaulting girlfriend
Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor assault charge in Harris County, Texas stemming from an incident with his girlfriend, according to multiple reports.
Winfrey, 22, is accused of grabbing his girlfriend and causing “bodily harm,” according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
It occurred around 7 p.m. on Monday and bystanders reportedly had to intervene in order to break up the altercation.
Per TMZ, the woman, who was not identified, told police that Winfrey had previously assaulted her in a separate incident as well.
The argument sparked over a disagreement about a dog and keys to a rental car, per the report.
A Browns spokesperson told ESPN that the team is “aware of the situation and gathering more information.”
The Browns selected Winfrey, who formerly starred at Oklahoma, in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Winfrey appeared in 13 games, but didn’t start any, with the Browns last year as a rookie.
He recorded 22 tackles and a half sack, and was also suspended for Cleveland’s second game of the season for undisclosed disciplinary reasons.
Winfrey played two seasons at Oklahoma after starting his collegiate career at the JUCO level with Iowa Western Community College.
He was originally academically ineligible to play NCAA Division I football coming out of high school.
After two seasons with Iowa Western Community College, 247 Sports ranked him as the best JUCO prospect in the nation, and Winfrey subsequently turned down offers from Alabama, Baylor, LSU and Texas to join Oklahoma.
With the Sooners, Winfrey recorded 40 total tackles,16.5 tackles for loss and six sacks in 20 games played.
Winfrey was the sixth defensive tackle selected in last year’s draft.
After the Browns signed veteran defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to a four-year, $57 million deal this offseason, Winfrey was seemingly in line to be the team’s primary backup to Tomlinson and Jordan Elliott.
Elliott started all 17 games at defensive tackle for the Browns last year.
