Bronny James suffers cardiac arrest during workout as LeBron praises USC staff
LeBron James’ son, Bronny, suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday while taking part in a USC basketball workout, it has been confirmed. The son of the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA icon was rushed to hospital and is now in stable condition, and no longer in ICU.
The 18-year-old, who recently committed to the Trojans and was set to wear his dad’s iconic No. 6 in his freshman year, was taken by ambulance from the Galen Center, where the school’s basketball team plays and practices, to a local hospital after a call was reportedly made at 9.26 am.
“Yesterday while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital,” a statement read. “He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU.
“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information. LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
Bronny is an NBA hopeful and on his way to a potential professional career in basketball following his commitment to USC. Dad James, 38, has hopes of playing alongside, or against, his son one day in the NBA, despite dropping hints over a retirement this year.
“I need to be on the floor with my boy, I got to be on the floor with Bronny. …either in the same uniform or a matchup against him,” James said in January. “But I would love to do the whole Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. thing. That would be ideal for sure.”
ESPN projected Bronny as a future top-10 pick in an early mock 2024 NBA Draft in February, meaning that James would have to stick around until he turns 40 to achieve his dream. James added: “My son is going to take his journey. And whatever his journey, however his journey lays out, he’s going to do what’s best for him… So, just because that’s my aspiration or my goal, doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”
James is expected to return to the Lakers after an offseason of consideration and fulfill his contract. The small forward has already cemented himself as one of the sport’s best-ever players, and he is the NBA’s all-time leading point scorer.
