Britain’s favourite supermarket revealed – and it’s not Aldi

The results are in – here’s what 7,000 British households have voted to be their very favourite supermarket.

This year, the gap between first and second place was a tiny 1%, with Aldi closing the gap between it and a winner with multiple years under its belt.

According to the NielsenIQ Homescan household panel poll for the Grocer Gold award, Tesco came first in the rankings with 20% of households giving it the top spot for the ninth year running.

Aldi came second with 19% of voting households choosing it, marking a rise of 1% since last year and making it just another 1% away from the top spot.

Sainsbury’s (12%) and Asda (11%) came third and fourth respectively, and Lidl (10%) was fifth.

On the other end of the scale, Co-op came dead last with just 1%. Ouch.

When asked to rank shops based on specific attributes, Tesco came first for shopping experience, promos and offers, convenient ways to shop, good technology, wide product choice and product availability.

M&S was ranked at the top in the quality food and drink, environmental, and ethics and social responsibility categories.

Meanwhile, Aldi just took the top spot for price, which was also ranked by the public as the most important attribute of a shop.

Given the supermarket’s overall ranking of second place, it really drives home just how important money matters are to the public right now.
