Brit shocked to discover Americans don’t butter bread in sandwiches
Simple pleasures don’t get much better than bread and butter.
And butter in a sandwich goes without saying… right?
A British tourist has found that, across the pond, this simply isn’t the case.
It seems our transatlantic friends aren’t familiar with the buttery layer in their famous sandwiches.
On the Reddit forum CasualUK, a man explained that the sandwich his father received in the US was far from the norm.
Sharing a photo of the sandwich in question, the poster explained that his father received a surprise after asking for it to be ‘buttered’.
Upon receiving his sando, the man discovered his bread was smeared with butter on the outside, rather than inside.
Sharing the bizarre snap, they wrote: ‘They don’t butter their sandwiches across the pond. This is what happened when my dad asked for his to be buttered.’
The intriguing post has since racked up more than 13,000 likes with many sharing their disbelief.
However, some Americans have jumped in on the chat to confirm that buttered bread isn’t commonplace in the States.
One person said: ‘No we don’t. I’m an American and I don’t know why Reddit showed me this subreddit but here I am and here’s your comment and no, we don’t butter our sandwiches.
‘Just to make it clear I too butter my breakfast sandwiches. I’m talking lunch/deli style sandwiches here.
‘Nobody I’ve never met is buttering the bread on their turkey and lettuce sandwiches.’
So it seems, along with squash, our US friends aren’t familiar with the UK’s culinary auto-pilots.
Although maybe they will follow in our footsteps with butter on the inside soon, after also recently discovering the humble crisp sandwich.
