‘Brilliant news!’ Asda to open 300 first ever convenience stores across the UK

Asda was bought by billionaires Mohsin and Zuber Issa in a £6.8billion deal last year. The brothers have unveiled new plans for the company which will see more Asda stores launching across the country.

“The reality is that Asda’s customer-centric philosophy, focus on operational excellence and commitment to the communities in which it operates are the same values that we have built Euro Garages (EG) Group on.

“In terms of plans, we see opportunities to broaden Asda’s offering.

“For example, we started to trial Asda on the Move in three of EG Group’s fuel station forecourts last October and subsequently added the convenience brand into an additional two EG outlets, so we currently have five in total.”

Speaking of further plans to expand the company, the spokesperson added: “We also see potential for EG to locate foodservice outlets both inside and on the car parks of Asda stores but it’s too early to provide any details.

“The Asda business has proven its resilience over the last 18 months and has a strong platform in place for further innovation and growth.”

As well as in petrol forecourts, the Issas are also understood to be thinking of opening supermarkets of between 30,000 and 40,000 sq ft on high streets and in out-of-town retail parks.

An industry source told the Times: “The fact Asda has not had a convenience retail offer, when convenience and discount retail are the only two growing categories…that kind of tells you how asleep at the switch Walmart was.”

Walmart was Asda’s previous owner before the Issas bought the business in October last year.

If the Issa brothers’ plans go ahead, Britons could see a small Asda store on their local high street or in their nearest petrol station very soon.

Some Britons have already taken to social media to express their opinions on the new concept.

One person said: “It is going to be interesting watching Asda taking on the convenience store market.”

Another wrote: “Brilliant news!”

One person added: “My first thought when @EuroGaragesLtd bought @asda is that we’re going to get thousands of mini ASDA stores on roads all over the UK. And here we go!”

In other Asda news, the supermarket announced a huge change coming to over 100 stores across the UK last month.

The retailer has begun stocking clothes from online retailer Missguided at some of its branches.

Shoppers can now pick up garments from the popular clothing brand at Asda’s George section.
