‘Brilliant’ Aussie debutant’s first big Test statement

Australian Test debutant Mitchell Swepson made an almost immediate impact with the ball in Pakistan… but not in the way anyone expected.

The newcomer was forced to sit on his hands for two days when the Aussies won the toss and chose to bat in Karachi, after Swepson had been handed his baggy green.

He played a cameo role with the bat on the morning of day three, working his way to 15 not out before captain Pat Cummins declared on 9-556.

Swepson then only had to wait for 11 overs before being brought on to bowl his first delivery in Test cricket.

His maiden over was largely uneventful, but it was two balls later that Swepson made his first significant mark on the game.

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq worked a Nathan Lyon delivery to backward point, and the batters bravely set off for a run.

Swepson was quick to pick up the ball and hurled it at the stumps, catching Abdullah Shafique well short of the crease to claim the first wicket.

Pakistan legend Waqar Younis was in commentary at the time and could not believe the run had been attempted.

“What were they thinking,” Younis said.

“What were they doing?

“There was never a single there, and the body language of Abdullah Shafique is telling a big story here.”
