Bridgerton star teases Brimsley’s future after ‘beautiful’ gay romance

Bridgerton star Hugh Sachs has teased Brimsley’s gay romance story could be far from over as the show heads into season 3.

Brimsley, who in the main series has been a barely focused-on side character in the main Bridgerton series, took centre stage in spin-off Queen Charlotte when it was revealed he was secretly gay.

In heartbreaking scenes, a young Brimsley (played by Sam Clemmett) was forced to hide his love affair with Reynolds (Freddie Dennis), as they worked as footmen for the Queen and King of England.

While it’s still not known what became of them, a solemn moment between an older Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) and Brimsley (Sachs) teases heartbreak is to come for the pair, whose relationship was illegal at the time.

But speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk on the Bafta TV awards red carpet, actor Sachs teased there could be more to come for Brimsley as the main show returns for season three.

“Everyone wants to know what happened to them, but I cannot say anything! Shonda [Rhimes, showrunner] will decide,” he said, before adding: “We know he’s alive.”

“The fans have wanted it for quite a while, a gay love story, and the way she wrote it and the way Sam and Freddie acted it is so beautiful, it’s really helped me actually.”

“We actually started filming season three after Queen Charlotte, and the costume department gave me a ring, which I’ve decided Reynolds had given him.

“So Reynolds is always with him.”

As for season three, he joked: “I can tell you nothing… except that it’s very, very good.”

Sachs did however, add that there is now more scope for things to develop with Brimsley in the main show, now that viewers – and him – are aware of his backstory.

“I don’t know, it’s entirely… the funny thing is, is when I was doing Bridgerton, I came up with a backstory for Brimsley which was so boring compared to what Shonda came up with, I completely erased it,” Sachs told us.

“So if she wants to explore it… it’s all up in the air. It’s whether or not it’s something that interests her.”

Season three of Bridgerton, based on the books by Julia Quinn, is due for release on Netflix later this year.

However, it will break from the tradition of following the books’ timeline, instead focusing on fourth novel, Romancing Mr Bridgerton.

This will place Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) as the central love story, taking over from season one’s Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) and season two’s Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley).

Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte are both available on Netflix.
