‘Bridgerton’ Season 2’s steamy sex scenes all about ‘the female gaze’

Preview in new tab

Netflix’s “Bridgerton” is known for its scandalous sex scenes, colorful Regency era fashions and shocking secrets.

And while the romance drama plays into those story elements, Season 2 is going to get even more hair-raising. Series star Jonathan Bailey divulged the show’s cheeky nickname as love scenes focus more on the “female gaze” in the upcoming season.

“There’s so many people who will go, ‘Oh yeah, “Bonkerton,”‘” Bailey — who plays Anthony Bridgerton — told Entertainment Weekly recently.

“The female gaze is so important because there are many ways people communicate by sex, and what sex means, and what your body means to someone else,” the British star, 33, continued. “It’s important that there’s an inversion of sexuality and how people are exploited in the storytelling of sex.”

His character’s quest to find love will be the focus of the new season, which will see Anthony become entangled with new girl Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley, 26.

Series showrunner Chris Van Dusen also told the outlet that the new season will give just as many “thirsty moments” to fans as the previous one. He added that Ashley and Bailey’s chemistry is “out of this world” and further revealed: “The season is charged and transporting and romantic.”

As for Kate, Ashley admitted to EW that her character isn’t afraid to go after her desires.

“There’s always been a familiarity deep down with what Kate wants,” the “Sex Education” actress said. “That’s what I love about shows like ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Sex Education.’ They might be touching on slightly taboo topics, but these characters know what they want.”

It was announced last year that the Duke of Hastings himself, smoldering breakout star Regé-Jean Page, would not be returning to the show.

A Hollywood source dished to Page Six last April that Page left due to “creative differences with [executive producer] Shonda Rhimes and her team.”

Jonathan Bailey, left, will be "Bridgerton's" next hottie after the departure of Rege-Jean Page.
Bailey’s character Anthony — left, in a Season 1 image with Simon Basset, played by Regé-Jean Page — will be the main focus of the upcoming season of “Bridgerton.”

The source added, “He wasn’t happy with what was planned for his character for Season 2, which would have kept him a player but not the focal point of the show.”

The “Grey’s Anatomy” creator addressed the news and told Vanity Fair at the time, explaining: “Usually that happens when I’ve killed off somebody that’s been around for a while. [But] we didn’t kill him, he’s still alive!”

“That was the plan: Come and do one season as the duke,” she added. “Anything else that was extra and wasn’t really the plan when we started wasn’t the plan when we finished.” She also clarified that the “Roots” actor was invited to do a cameo in the next season.

Season 2 of “Bridgerton” will premiere March 27 on Netflix.
