Brian May celebrates launch of his exhibition and book with Ben Elton

Last night, Brian May hosted a private viewing of his stereoscopy exhibition at the book launch for Stereoscopy Is Good For You: Life in 3-D. The 75-year-old was joined at Proud Galleries in Charring Cross by fellow photography enthusiast and We Will Rock You musical writer Ben Elton. There, the Queen guitarist shared how he was very proud to accomplish his mission of spreading the niche photographic medium across the world.

Brian’s new book collects the work of over 100 21st century stereoscopic 3-D photographers during the pandemic and from all around the world.

Included are images of nature, insects, people, pets, architecture, indoor recreations and even the sky. All of these can be viewed through the star’s very own OWL Stereoscopic Viewer, which comes with the book.

Proud Galleries have installed a five month exhibition showcasing a selection of the pictures in an immersive experience that opens tomorrow. Also included are Queen in 3-D snaps of Brian with Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.

Brian enthused: “Here you will see an amazing breadth of invention. Some people took their smartphones into their garden if they were lucky enough to have one, capturing flowers, plants and garden creatures. Some snapped the newly appreciated beauty of their immediate surrounding landscapes on permitted walks. Some, stuck indoors, ingeniously managed to create whole model scenes from toys and models. And some even turned their cameras to the sky. Some worked purely virtually, on their laptops, creating imaginary landscapes. Some opportunistically used data available on the Internet to make stereos of the heavens. And, as the COVID restrictions eventually began to relax, the new stereographers ventured back out and reclaimed the world! You will see it all here.”

Stereoscopy Is Good For You: Life In 3-D is out now and can be purchased for £30 here. And the exhibition opens tomorrow on November 3 with tickets costing £7 that can be booked here.
