Brewers made big push to acquire Mets’ Pete Alonso at trade deadline
Pete Alonso’s long-term future in Queens remains murky, and the Mets even reportedly explored the possibility of trading the star infielder to a surprise team at the trade deadline.
Before the Aug. 1 deadline, the Brewers made a significant push to try and acquire the All-Star, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Milwaukee held conversations with the Mets before and after its July 27 trade with the Pirates that brought first baseman Carlos Santana to the Brewers.
A source connected to the Brewers organization indicated to The Athletic that the Mets and Brewers were in “field-goal range” on a potential deal, but a source in New York told Rosenthal that talks between the two clubs never got to that level.
Other teams, including the Cubs, reached out to the Mets about Alonso, but talks never got that serious, according to the report.
Alonso reacted to the report on Tuesday night after the Mets fell to the Braves 3-2 at Truist Park.
“I love representing this organization. I love being a Met,” Alonso told reporters. “I love representing the city of New York the best way I possibly can. I love everybody in the clubhouse. Being a Met, it’s the only thing I know.”
He added: “I don’t know what the future holds, but right now I’m a Met. And I love being a Met.”
The first baseman has been the focus of plenty of speculation after the Mets went into sell-off mode at the trade deadline, though The Post’s Jon Heyman reported on Aug. 3 that the asking price for the slugger was incredibly high.
He has one year left on his contract and will become a free agent after the 2024 season unless he receives a contract extension.
Alonso leads the Mets with 39 homers, 95 RBIs and an .856 OPS this season.
He’s belted 185 homers since he entered the league in 2019 when he won the National League’s Rookie of the Year award.
