Luca Brecel came out on top in the final of the World Snooker Championship, defeating Mark Selby to not only claim his first-ever world title but also a mammoth cash prize. The Belgian Bullet’s victory at The Crucible ensured that he earned over twice as much prize money in one night than Emma Raducanu has playing tennis in 2023.
Both Brecel and Selby were rewarded financially despite only the 29-year-old taking home silverware, as the Belgian took home a huge prize of £500,000 as the tournament’s winner.
While runner-up Selby earned a consolation prize of £200,000 as the pair celebrated their successes together into the night – with the Englishman even making a special request to the DJ to honour his opponent in Sheffield.
Semi-finalsts Mark Allen and Si Jiahui pocketed £100,000 each, while those who reached the final eight including Ronnie O’Sullivan took home £50,000. £30,000 went to those who claimed one win at the Crucible, while opening-round losers took home £20,000.
That is because a £15k prize goes to the player who makes the highest-scoring break. A £40k award is then given to a player who scores a maximum break in the main draw. Kyren Wilson was the only player to make a 147 this year before Selby did so in the final for the first time in the competition’s history, meaning the former was forced to share his earnings.
Brecel’s substantial payday engulfs what Raducanu has earned in the first five months of the year, as she has pocketed £190,719 ($237,627) on the WTA tour amid a disappointing season. The former US Open champion is set to fall out of the top 100 for the first time since her New York win in 2021, as she alongside several Brits were recently slammed by Dan Evans.
