The 2022 season is nearly over with this weekend being the penultimate race of the year. And if Saturday’s sprint race is anything to go by, the Brazilian Grand Prix is set to provide fireworks.
Max Verstappen was the strong favourite to keep up his impressive sprint record, but he struggled on the medium compound with Mercedes finally able to battle with Red Bull on the track. George Russell was involved in a brilliant wheel-to-wheel battle with the 2022 F1 champion before getting the better of him and taking the chequered flag.
And with Carlos Sainz being handed a five-place grid penalty for taking on a sixth ICE unit of the year, Lewis Hamilton will start today’s race behind his team-mate on the front row. It’s the first time this year that Mercedes have started a Sunday race on the front row together and will be hoping they can finally pick up their elusive victory.
Hamilton’s position was under threat, along with Daniel Ricciardo and Zhou Guanyu, with the trio under investigation by race stewards for not being in the correct starting position on the grid for the sprint race. But they escaped punishment with race stewards accepting visibility for the grid boxes were difficult as they were smaller than usual.
