A man’s proposal to his girlfriend in Kenya was like something out of a movie – but it was more of a thriller than a romcom.
While fitness influencer, Steph Currie was travelling in Kenya, her boyfriend, Mantas, decided to secretly follow her there to pop the question.
In a video Steph posted on TikTok, Mantas reveals how Steph had no idea where he was – and didn’t tell her he’d be uncontactable due to the long flight from the USA.
‘I’ve gone off the grid, she’s freaking out,’ he says, while screen grabs of their text conversation flash up on screen. ‘Mantas, can you text me when you get this… I’m worried,’ reads one message.
Then when he arrives in Maasai Mara, Kenya, he says he ‘hires some locals’ with a plan to ‘ambush’ Sarah while on safari, pretending to place her under arrest.
The video then cuts to a man in camouflage with a gun, holding Sarah’s hands behind her back, while she bends over with her face on the bonnet of the van she was travelling in.
Behind them, Mantas creeps up on them, covered in a blanket. Finally, the rangers tell her to turn around, and she sees him on one knee.
‘I will chase you all over the world,’ he said. ‘I’ll follow you anywhere you go, so you can’t get away from me.
‘Will you marry me Steph?’
Steph seems pretty over the moon in the video and says yes – but the comment section on the TikTok post, which now has 139,000 views, is pretty divided about the man’s choice of surprise.
‘Hellll no. Terrible,’ wrote one person. Another replied, saying: ‘Being “ambushed” is not romantic at all.’
Another person called it ‘cruel and twisted,’ while one commenter wrote: ‘I would say no bcs you’re crazy letting your gf living this trauma.’
However, the majority of commenters thought the proposal was sweet.
‘If he wanted to he would,’ said one person.
‘Crying, this is so beautiful. Congratulations,’ said another.
