Boxer charged for part in one of largest American cocaine seizures

Former professional Montenegrin boxer Goran Gogic has been charged with his involvement in one of the largest cocaine seizures in American history. Gogic was charged with trafficking 22 tons of cocaine worth over £865million (roughly $1 billion) overseas.

The 43-year-old was arrested while trying to board a flight from Miami International Airport to Zurich on Sunday night after being indicted by a grand jury in New York and was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday.

Gogic has been charged with three counts of violating the federal Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act, and one count of conspiracy. Each count carries a possible life sentence with a 10-year minimum term.

The offences are linked to the confiscation of 22 tons of cocaine from three US commercial cargo ships back in 2019.

Gogic retired from professional boxing in 2012 with a 21-4-2 record. He fought the majority of his career in Germany against European-level opposition but did partake in one higher-profile encounter with world amateur bronze and silver medallist Pedro Carrion in 2006.

Gogic went on to lose the bout via unanimous decision over six rounds of professional boxing at the Sporthalle in Alsterdorf, Germany.
