Viewers of Channel 4’s Undercover Boss USA saw the president of the pretzel store trying to resolve things with franchise owners Bill and Donna. Undercover Boss USA shows the journey of bosses who go in disguise among their own staff to see where their firm is excelling and where it needs improvement.
Bill and his wife run the store together. She does the bookkeeping and he does all the practical work.
He explained to the undercover boss that when he first started working, he was not given any training so had to experiment with the dough recipe.
Bill said: “A lot of people don’t realise how much is involved. They didn’t teach us any of that.
“I went to corporate for help and got it thrown back in my face.”

Bill explained that he had to create his own product in order to make sales.
He has been making pretzel rolls for over two years and this is what helps him keep things running.
He continued: “I can’t even pay for the broken window.
“That’s like $500 (£420) for that, I’m worried about paying my next bill.
“If business doesn’t pick up, we’re going to go under.

Donna responded: “It’s just not good for us, when you go home after a long day and you’ve worked so hard and you can’t pay your bills, it’s hard.
“Right now we owe $500 (around £420) from last month’s rent, and we have not paid this month’s.”
Bill added: “We’re a month behind on electric and gas. When you get so far behind it’s hard to breathe anymore.”
Bill and Donna have had to put $20,000 (around £17,000) in this business just to try and keep it afloat with no help from corporate.
They explained to Mr DiZio that they gone to him to ask for help and solutions a year prior and he gave them nothing.
In tears, he said: “It hurts me that you would say that. It was never my intention to ever be like that. I’m not doing that good of a job. I apologise you get caught up with these meetings and I don’t get a chance to come down. I want to help you guys. I know things are real bleak right now and we have to step in to find away to keep the doors open.”
To support the couple, he offered them one month of business training so they can figure out how they can start making money by selling pretzels and not just Bill’s new product.
Mr DiZio wanted Bill to be successful whatever it took.
He said he would pay their rent for a year so they can purely focus on marketing and building their business.
Bill said: “I forgive you. It can only get better from here. I’m just glad you’re here for us. This is the miracle we asked for. We’re going to be okay now.”
