The long-gestating Borderlands movie finally has a release date, according to Deadline. The well-connected Hollywood-focused website reports today that the adaptation of Gearbox’s acclaimed first-person shooter series will debut in theaters on August 9th, 2024.
Originally announced in February 2020, just when the COVID pandemic was hitting the world, the Borderlands movie was made by Lionsgate and produced by PictureStart/Arad Productions. Brothers Avi and Ari Arad are listed as producers alongside Erik Feig. The film is based on a screenplay by Craig Mazin (who however requested to be credited with the pseudonym of Joe Crombie, a possible hint that Mazin doesn’t have a lot of faith in the work) and Cabin Fever and Hostel’s Eli Roth, who directed the production. Recently, though, reshoots were reportedly done by Deadpool’s Tim Miller.

Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot.
These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands, but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.
On the gaming front, Gearbox released the spin-off title New Tales from the Borderlands last year. However, the game failed to gain any traction. It got a 5 out of 10 in Wccftech’s review penned by Nate Birch, who stated:
Honestly, though, I didn’t really care that my playthrough’s ending made no sense. I just wasn’t invested at all. New Tales from the Borderlands can be wrapped up in around 7 hours, and I was more than happy to blast off to a new galaxy once the credits rolled.
