Boozy habit costing Aussies over $300
Around a million Aussies have woken up with more than a hangover after indulging in this costly activity.
If you’ve ever woken up hungover and with a chunk of money missing from your account, you’re not alone, according to new research.
Almost one in five adult Aussies have shopped online while drunk, fintech company Finder found.
Out of those who admitted to splurging online while boozy, the average amount individuals have most spent in one sitting was $328.
Surprisingly, men are the worst offenders spending more than $343 in one sitting, compared to women forking out $306.
Gen X are the worst drunk shoppers shelling out $425 on average per sitting, compared to $299 for Millennials and $265 for Gen Z.
Those from NSW are more likely to splurge while drunk with $370 spent on average, compared to $252 by Victorians.
The most popular things to splash the cash on are food delivery, more alcohol and clothes or shoes, while more outlandish purchases include airline tickets and pets.
But it’s not just the only drunk activity Aussies are indulging in. Some have even gone as far as applying for a job and applying for a house or apartment.
Kate Browne, personal finance expert at Finder, said the past two years have seen a huge change in how we shop online.
“Shopping online is so common and even more accessible than ever. Shoppers have a wider range of goods and services at their fingertips, and can shop around for a bargain at any time,” she said.
“On the down side, because shopping online is so easy, it’s possible to shop whenever you want, and no matter what state of mind you are in, including if you’ve had a few drinks.”
According to Australia Post, nine million Australian households shopped online in 2020, the equivalent to 82 per cent of all households.
Online purchases grew by 57 per cent year on year for the 12 months to December 31, 2020 as Australians spent a record $50 billion online up from $32.1 billion in 2019.
Online spend accounted for 16 per cent of total retail spend.
Ms Browne said now is the time to get your finances in check before the upcoming holiday season.
“We are coming into the most expensive time of the year, so it’s a great idea to plan ahead.
“Try and do your Christmas shopping a bit earlier during the November sales such as Black Friday to grab bargains,” she said.
“If you can, try and put some extra cash away every time you get paid to give yourself a little more wiggle room to splurge during silly season.”
