Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson laughs off ‘nepo baby’ label: ‘devastated I’m not featured’
Bono’s daughter, Eve Hewson, is the latest young celeb to land herself in social media hot water thanks to her response to the debate about nepotism in Hollywood.
Ever since New York Magazine did a cover story on the topic last week, the subject of “nepo babies” — or Hollywood stars who have parents in the industry — has been a hot-button buzzword.
Hewson, 31, who is the daughter of U2 frontman Bono and his wife, activist Ali Hewson, tweeted her sarcastic response: “Actually pretty devastated i’m not featured in the nepo baby article like haven’t they seen my hit show Bad Sisters??? The NERVE.”
Hewson, who is Irish-born but based in Brooklyn, is an actress who has appeared in series such as the Netflix psychological thriller “Behind Her Eyes”; the Clive Owen period drama “The Knick”; and the Starz period drama “The Luminaries.” Her most recent project is the AppleTV+ black comedy “Bad Sisters,” from “Catastrophe” alum Sharon Horgan, which has been renewed for Season 2.
The show depicts a group of sisters who find themselves in the midst of an investigation when their boorish brother-in-law dies unexpectedly — and each of them has motive to have killed him. Hewson plays the youngest sister, a massage therapist who’s something of a hot mess.
Some fans were not impressed with Hewson’s comments about nepotism. One wrote: “I thought bono’s daughter eve hewson did a good job on the show bad sisters but seeing her lose her sh-t over the nepo baby issue is giving me secondhand embarrassment.”
Another pointed out that the article did, in fact, mention her.
Hewson later clarified in follow-up tweets: “For those of you who have just tuned in to my existence, I am asked about my privilege a lot. And I have always been very keen to state how much my father’s name helped me get a start in acting. I am beyond grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in my life … And to the Twitter bots and girlos calling me a spoiled brat .. please don’t forget to have a sense of humour in life. And try to be kind. We all need a little bit more kindness in the world. Much love.”
Hewson is just the latest celeb to get swept up in the “nepo baby” controversy. Kate Moss’ sister, Lottie Moss, also sparked a Twitter uproar after making off-the-cuff comments, and even deleted her account over the backlash.
Meanwhile, “OG Nepo Baby” Jamie Lee Curtis dismissed the debate.
“The current conversation about nepo babies is just designed to try to diminish and denigrate and hurt,” the accomplished daughter of “Psycho” actress Janet Leigh and “Some Like It Hot” actor Tony Curtis wrote on Instagram.
