Bolton midfielder’s Comley’s exit outlined as Evatt speaks on ex-Wanderers

Ian Evatt has explained the reasons why Brandon Comley’s time at Bolton Wanderers has come to a premature end.

The 25-year-old joined Bolton last summer on a two-year deal ahead of the League Two season beginning.

The former Colchester United midfielder started the 2020/21 season as a first choice selection in the middle of the park, but as the campaign wore on found himself more as an unused substitute or on the bench.

Comley was not included in Wanderers’ EFL squad list for the League One campaign and made just one appearance this season in the Papa John’s Trophy against Liverpool U21s, after a reported late transfer window move to Leyton Orient failed to materialise.

The midfielder parted company with Wanderers last week, despite his contract at the University of Bolton Stadium running until next summer, and is now free to find a club in non-league football at any time, or can link up with a side in the EFL in January.

Comley found himself in potentially the most competitive area of the Wanderers squad, which includes the likes of MJ Williams, Andrew Tutte, Kieran Lee, Josh Sheehan, George Thomason and until recently Antoni Sarcevic.

Evatt believes Comley was part of a team which had a difficult start to life in League Two and that the move did not work out for either party.

But that can happen in the game and the Bolton boss has wished the ex-Wanderers the best for the future.

He said: “Brandon came in and was part of a team at the start which was very difficult for all of us.

“We stumbled through to January and made changes to the team – and I’d argue his position has been the strongest part of the squad with the emergence of George Thomason, MJ, Kieran, Tuttey, now Josh and we had Sarce at the time. It was very challenging for Brandon.

“Sometimes it happens in football and it didn’t really work out for either party.

“But I do wish him well for the future and hope he finds another club, and goes on to play regular football again.”
