Body language expert compares royal Christmas card photographs

The Prince and Princess of Wales released their family Christmas card last week, a few days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared theirs. Body language expert Jesús Enrique Rosas analysed the two photographs during a recent YouTube video and discussed a few “strange” details that he spotted; the positioning of Prince William’s hand, the absence of Archie and Lilibet, and how the photographs were presented.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Christmas card was taken earlier this year, in the summer, when they and their three children; Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were in Norfolk, England.

The photograph was shot by a professional Matt Porteous who sees the family holding hands and walking along a path, smiling in the sunshine.

Jesús looked at the image and said: “In this case, the key word is light – we have this open space, green space, natural. They’re taking a walk on a path, it’s the space and light, that’s what you see as the first impression.

“Their facial expressions, they are all smiling, the only difference is William is looking away from the camera to one side. What could that mean? I think he was just looking around, he looks relaxed, maybe he didn’t feel the need at that moment to look into the camera, but in this case, it is very common, they took a lot of pictures [of this particular moment] and this is the one they decided to publish.

“It’s interesting to notice every single one of them is wearing blue and white tones, and that is a signal and symbol of home – that is part of the message they are trying to convey,” he noted.

“I like this picture apart from one thing – William with his hand in his pocket, and that is a big no-no. That’s not something someone who is confident does,” the expert claimed, “you always keep your hands on display – that’s part of showing confidence.

“He is the father of the family, the leader of the pack, he should display all the confidence, I understand he doesn’t need to display confidence [as he’s a Prince].”

Jesús added: “[It’s] not surprising the Cambridge’s chose a family photo because they have chosen a family photo every year.”

The expert then looked at Meghan and Harry’s Christmas card which he said was “much more formal”. Jesús explained: “We have two cues; the black and white picture and the burgundy, very formal, very professional.

“We have text, in this case: ‘Wishing you a joyful holiday season. From our family to yours, and on behalf of our teams at The Archewell Foundation, Archewell Audio, and Archewell Productions, we wish you health, peace, and a very happy new year! Best wishes, Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.’

“The Sussexes included a professional picture, this was from the Ripple of Hope Award Gala (which took place at the beginning of December) – we were expecting them to include the children [in their Christmas card photo].

“I think it’s a bit cold, and detached, the fact they aren’t showing themselves as a family [but send holiday wishes as a family], such a formal card,” Jesús claimed.

“Maybe they had to go with the very formal professional because they didn’t want to show the children, it would’ve been strange to see a happy couple [at an informal occasion] without the children.

“In this picture, they are not looking straight into the camera, they are trying to look a bit relaxed. In fact, they look quite tense, not only Meghan’s neck, but Harry’s posture is not the most comfortable.

“The real contrast here is that they included a professional photograph, meanwhile in the recent Netflix documentary they were natural.”

Jesús continued: “What I also found interesting is Meghan and Harry chose a black and white filter, Meghan was wearing white and Harry was wearing black.

This is a recurring theme [Meghan wearing white and Harry wearing black] – Netflix documentary and Time magazine cover, I think they want to make that part of their branding. Black is a very masculine colour for Harry, and white is an innocent and ethereal colour.”

Comparing the Wales’ and Sussex’s cards, Jesús said: “We have the Prince and Princess of Wales, showing their family as a family, and not as royals on the Christmas card. It’s a nice contrast between the focus of both families, even if Meghan and Harry we just have a couple.

“You can see the stark contrast between the two Christmas cards, and especially the irony.

“This family [Wales’] are out in the open, they look rather free, and Harry and Meghan are inside a box [the photo on the Christmas card], they are like trapped?

“To some extent, we are comparing oranges to apples, because we don’t see the text in the Prince and Princess of Wales Christmas card, maybe in the case of the Sussex we’re seeing the complete composition, and this in the Wales’ family, we are looking at one of the pictures they have included for Christmas cards because usually, it’s a series of photographs and one is chosen.”

In summary, Jesús said: “Last year we had vastly more interesting Christmas cards in both camps, especially in the case of Harry and Meghan.”
