B&M shopper slashes £70 shop to just £3 with ‘hidden’ discount

A B&M shopper slashed her bill from £70 to just £3 after she discovered a scanner that can be used to check for savings.

While the deal may no longer be available, the way she saved could prove useful for other bargain hunters.

Danielle Harper bought three rugs for a hugely reduced price from the variety store using a scanner she found in the B&M app, reported the Manchester Evening News.

She shared a picture of the chunky knit navy blue rugs on Facebook, saying: “Finally found a bargain at B&M by using the scanner in the app! Each rug – £1 each.”

This was a huge saving from the original prices, with one larger rug priced at £40 and the two smaller rugs at £15 each.

After many people commented asking how she got the massive saving, she explained there is a scanner at the bottom of the screen when loading the app.

This scanner can be used to scan the barcode of any item in the store to see if the price has been reduced.

The device can pick up items that are being discounted including end of line and clearance products, which staff have not yet marked down in store.

Danielle explained: “When you’re in store open the app onto the scanner and you can scan anything you want that they sell.

“I’ve been doing it a while and only just found these bargains so it can be hit and miss, but there’s lots of ‘sets’ etc in the sale after Xmas so it’s a great time to use the scanner to find some cheaper things as they don’t always mark them down on the shelves.”

Many of the people who responded to the post said they would be trying out the app themselves.

One person said: “We need to download the app and have a day out in B&M scanning for bargains.”

One woman claimed when she had tried using the scanner, it didn’t always recognise the barcode on an item.

But another person said this could mean a shopper could get an even bigger saving on the unrecognised item.

They said: “If the item isn’t recognised in the scanner and it’s older stock it’s usually 10p. Sometimes it can be new stock that isn’t on the system yet, but 90 percent of the time it’s 10p.”

A spokesperson for B&M said the scanner launched around three years ago and has become very popular with bargain hunters.

They said: “B&M aims to provide customers with an exciting shopping experience, always offering great products at fantastic prices.

“We’re delighted that our customers love finding a bargain deal as much as we do, and the scanner app has continued to grow in popularity since it launched.

“The dedication shown by the army of bargain hunters to seek out the best deals is proof that everybody loves a bargain.”

Britons will be even more keen to find bargains when out shopping as the prices on the shelves continue to go up.

Food inflation reached a record 19.1 percent in March, with the cost of some meat, yoghurt and vegetables items doubling compared to a year ago.

Discounted items in the supermarket often have a yellow sticker on them indicating the marked down price along with a new barcode to scan at the checkout.
