Bluesky: Twitter’s ‘mess’ leads to increase in sign-ups on BlueSky, Mastodon – Times of India

On early Sunday morning, Elon Musk dropped a rather bombshell on users by restricting the number of tweets they can see in a day. Following Musk’s announcement, it seems like a lot of users went flocking to Twitter’ rivals. According to a report by The Verge, Bluesky — which claims to be a decentralised social network — had to temporarily halt up new sign-ups. In a post, BlueSky said, “We will temporarily be pausing Bluesky sign-ups while our team continues to resolve the existing performance issues. We’ll keep you updated when invite codes will resume functionality. We’re excited to welcome more users to our beta soon!”
Bluesky is incidentally backed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
According to the report, another Twitter rival saw thousands of users signing up. Mastodon, which is also a Twitter-like platform, also saw close to 26,000 sign-ups in a single day.
A mass exodus from Twitter?
Elon Musk stated that the restrictions were implemented to prevent “extreme levels of data scraping” and “system manipulation” by “several hundred organizations.” Musk expressed concern on Friday about the extensive scraping of Twitter data by numerous organizations, which he claimed had negatively impacted the user experience. He claimed that companies that use large amounts of data to train artificial intelligence language models are to blame.
The Twitter executive chairman said that he found it frustrating that his team had to urgently bring a large number of servers online to meet the excessive demands of some AI startups seeking outrageous valuations. Musk later announced that the limits would be relaxed to 8,000 for verified accounts and 800 for non-Twitter Blue users. The current rate limits are 10,000, 1,000, and 500 tweets per day for Blue, non-Blue, and newly registered users, respectively.
