Blues firming as Freo’s biggest threat in Cerra chase

Carlton has reportedly vaulted itself into the front of the Adam Cerra sweepstakes as the out-of-contract Fremantle star weighs up his future.

Despite having a multi-year contract offer on the table from the Dockers, Cerra, a Melbourne native, is understood to be torn between the prospect of staying in Perth or returning home.

According to The Age’s Jake Niall, Cerra “favours Carlton over other Melbourne clubs”, with the other Victorian club linked to him, Richmond, preferring to go to this year’s draft armed with multiple first-round picks.

“Fremantle have already made Cerra a significant offer, but sources familiar with the situation said his decision will be based on family – his partner is also from Melbourne – rather than money,” Niall wrote.

“It is likely that the Dockers would offer at least as much to Cerra as Carlton and the club is open to both two-year and longer-term deals with the 22-year-old midfielder.”

It remains unclear what Fremantle’s asking price in a trade would be if Cerra does request a move to Carlton, with any deal likely to be centred around the Blues’ first-round pick which is currently slated to be No.6 in this year’s draft.

After being taken fifth overall in the 2017 draft, Cerra has blossomed alongside Andrew Brayshaw in what has become a strong on-ball brigade alongside the veteran duo of David Mundy and Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe.

Cerra has played 17 games in 2021 and is averaging career-highs in disposals per game (23.2), marks per game (5.2), Inside 50s per game (5.1) and clearances per game (3.4).
