Blue Beetle Director Angel Manuel Soto Explains Post-Credits Scene and What It Means in the Future of DC

Editor’s Note: This article contains major spoilers for DC’s Blue Beetle (2023)!

Blue Beetle hit theatres in India on August 18, 2023, with the character of Jaime Reyes as the first superhero introduced with the DC Reboot. Before the release, Director Angel Manuel Soto had revealed that the movie is the first of a three-part story, and the post-credits scene confirmed that we’ll get to more of the Blue Beetle(s). In a recent interview, Director Soto shared more details about plans with the superhero. Here’s all we know.

A brief background

Blue Beetle is a DC superhero who was first introduced as the alter ego of Dan Garrett back in 1939. Garrett discovered an ancient Scarab and could use it to harness its powers to fight crimes as the superhero Blue Beetle. The mantle was taken on by Garrett’s student, Ted Kord who (spoiler alert!) Blue Beetle moviegoers would recall as the former head of Kord Industries and Jenny Kord’s father. The movie revealed (you are entering major spoiler territory) that Ted Kord disappeared under mysterious circumstances and was presumed dead before his sister Victoria Kord took over the company.

Both Ted Kord and Dan Garrett have been mentioned in the movie, where Jenny even went on to give Jaime access to her father’s secret base of operations and machinery. However, the mid-credits scene of the movie came with the big reveal that Ted Kord is still alive and is looking for his daughter to help save him.

While it is yet to unfold if his call for help will go unheeded or not, Warner Bros is yet to officially confirm the Blue Beetle sequels. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Soto said, “We had it written down [in the script]. We knew that was what we wanted our story to have”.

Blue Beetle-Booster Gold team-up teased

Soto also mentioned Booster Gold, following Safran and Gunn’s announcement of a Booster Gold series coming to HBO Max earlier this year. For some context, in the comics, Ted Kord as Blue Beetle is often seen alongside Booster Gold. In line with this, Soto teased that we might get to see the two of them together on screen soon. He implied that mid-credits are a build-up towards that.

Soto said in a statement, “We all love Ted Kord and Booster Gold, and knowing that James Gunn also has plans for Booster Gold, it felt like the right thing for us to continue with.” He explained, “Ted Kord is still alive, he’s somewhere out there in the universe, and whatever the future holds for our hero is open to interpretation.” Soto added, “whether that is Booster Gold or Ted Kord or if it is both of them [together], the possibility exists and it is something that we want to entertain.”

However, a focus on Ted Kord doesn’t mean it’s the end of the line of Jaime Reyes’ journey in DC reboot. After all, Jaime was chosen by the Scarab. Soto also teased chance of seeing more of the Jaime’s relationship with the Scarab. In the comics, the Scarab originates from an alien race called The Reach. Soto added, “Let’s see if we end up beating up the Reach at one point. “For me, it’s expansive and the opportunities are so exciting.”
