BJP waits for probe report, refuses comment on Lakhimpur Kheri incident

Two days after the Lakhimpur incident, the BJP is now waiting for the investigation report. The party leaders were busy with PM Modi’s visit to Lucknow on Tuesday. ET spoke to several leaders, most of whom said they would wait for the report before jumping to any conclusion.

“Right now, whatever we say would be construed as politicising the incident. What is needed now has been done by the government — by offering compensation and government jobs to the families of the deceased,” a BJP leader said. On Monday, Union MoS for home Ajay Mishra ‘Teni’, called the party leadership in Lucknow and Delhi and told them that his son was not present at the time of the incident. He also presented his side of the story. Some leaders believe there could be a conspiracy to defame the state government before elections.

“Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi left on Sunday evening to visit the place. Two chief ministers from Punjab and Chhattisgarh also tried to visit the place. Either they are trying to deflect attention from their own problems in these two states or they had prior information about the incident,” Satya Kumar, BJP co-incharge of UP told ET.

“The opposition parties are trying to create unrest in UP. They are not worried about farmers’ welfare. They are only worried about their vote bank and political interests,” Swatantra Dev Singh, UP BJP chief, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the BJP has planned for ‘kisan chaupals’ in 56,000 gram sabhas of UP from October 15 to October 30.
