BJP MLA moves Calcutta HC challenging PAC Chairmanship of Mukul Roy
Ambika Ray, the BJP MLA, has appealed in the PIL and sought reply on how Mukul Roy could become PAC Chairman when he was not nominated by the BJP for the post.
Mukul Roy, a BJP MLA from Krishnanagar North, had defected to Trinamool Congress after the recently concluded Bengal assembly polls, and he was nominated by the Speaker of Bengal Assembly Biman Banerjee.
Controversy surrounded the nomination of Roy as BJP Leader of Opposition opposed the move and filed a petition against it.
The Speaker of the West Bengal assembly on July 16 held the first hearing of the BJP’s petition seeking to disqualify Mukul Roy, who has defected to the ruling Trinamool Congress, from the House.
The proceedings started amid row over the nomination of Roy, who had won the assembly election on a BJP ticket, but later defected to Trinamool Congress. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, a position traditionally given to an opposition member.
Leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari was present at the hearing before the speaker and he was asked to submit some more documents. The next hearing has been scheduled for July 30.
