BJP brass to activate machinery in states due for elections in 2 years

Senior BJP leaders such as home minister Amit Shah and party’s national president JP Nadda have taken charge of preparing the BJP’s election machinery in states which are scheduled to go to the polls in the next two years.

Shah will tour six states in April over 14 days, according to party functionaries, including Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh. He will also visit Bihar for two days this month.

Nadda will tour four states, including Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. He visited Rajasthan on Saturday and a three-day Himachal Pradesh visit will begin from April 9. Nadda is likely to visit Chhattisgarh and one more state but the programme has not been finalised yet.

“We are currently busy with Khairagarh assembly bypoll in Chhattisgarh on April 12. We will have a meeting after April 12 and then only any programme of our top leaders will be discussed,” Nitin Navin, BJP’s Chhattisgarh coincharge, told ET.

The two leaders will hold meetings of party workers and legislators to assess the state of the organisation as well as the BJP’s state governments.

The party’s top leadership is also encouraging party MPs to take part in social work and other causes in their constituencies to become battle-ready for the 2024 general election. During the current parliament session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been meeting MPs from different states in a group. According to people aware of the matter, he has instructed party MPs to participate not only in political activities but also in social work and activities.

The Gujarat unit of the BJP, for instance, distributed a special saffron cap to all party MPs along with a packet of nutrition chocolates. A similar cap was worn by PM Modi during his recent roadshow in Ahmedabad on March 11. Some of the party leaders such as Dharmendra Pradhan, Giriraj Singh and others have made public appearances wearing the cap.

Nutrition chocolates will be distributed by the MPs to women in their constituencies in the coming days, as part of the BJP’s women outreach programme.
