Birthday special: When Sonam Kapoor talked to Filmfare about love, fashion, motherhood and more!
Sonam Kapoor is known to be a hardworking actress and a true-blue fashionista. As birthday girl Sonam Kapoor celebrates another year of her fabulous life, we take a look back at her most memorable quotes from Filmfare interviews through the years.
Sonam Kapoor believe ‘love changes people’
What is shown in films is not love but what you saw in Raanjhanaa is definitely love. In films everything is just so perfect, perfect hero, perfect heroine and perfect situation. But in real life nothing is perfect. I believe love changes people.
Sonam Kapoor lists down her top fashion icons
Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nutan, Sadhana, Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman and Rekha are icons. Apparently, Meenaji used to design her own clothes and jewellery. Zeenat Aman was a stylish actress. I admire Rekhaji because she has worked hard on herself. Like a sponge she has soaked in things. She is a real artiste; she does her own make-up. Be it her hair, her hand movements, her voice – she has devised her own style. If you go back to the ’80s and ’90s, most actresses dressed similarly as there were few designers. Rekhaji was the only one in that era with a unique style statement.
Sonam Kapoor on how movies inspire her style
One should wear the outfit; the outfit should not wear you. You’ve to enjoy dressing up. I’m inspired by Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn’s sense of dressing. Movies too have inspired me to wear beautiful clothes. And while acting, I don’t dress to be edgy but to be a character.
How does Sonam Kapoor motivate herself to go to the gym?
I go as ‘colourful’ as possible. I have to motivate myself while working out. Also, I wear minimum gym wear as I need to see what parts need toning up. If you cover yourself you won’t know which body part you need to concentrate on.
Here’s Sonam Kapoor’s favourite perfume
Michael by Michael Kors. I love it because it has a jasmine scent and jasmine reminds me of India. Do you wear different perfumes during the day and night? During the day one must not wear a strong perfume. But it should be something that lasts through the day. You can keep spraying it whenever you think it’s fading. At night, wear something that stands out and lasts long.
Sonam Kapoor on trolls on social media
It’s not only me. Anyone and everyone is getting slammed on social media for no fault of theirs. There are actually professionals, who sit there and write dirt about you even if it’s not true – without research and thought. That’s such a sad existence and a sad life. I don’t feel bad for myself anymore. I feel bad for them because it’s bad karma for them. They’ll be going to hell for sure. Secondly, their whole existence depends on trolling someone. They’re being paid for that job. So I can’t take it personally.
And her favourite retro song is..
Lag jaa gale (Woh Kaun Thi? 1964) is my favourite. And that’s the one thing that we all want to do. Hug people, right? I’m not sureeli at all. I’m the most besura person ever. I’m not like Alia
(Bhatt), Parineeti Chopra or Priyanka Chopra, who sing well. Even Shraddha (Kapoor) sings well because it’s in her genes… Anyway, I love the beautiful song.
Sonam Kapoor on Bollywood being a man’s industry
It’s misogynistic and extremely sexist. It’s unfortunate but that’s the way it is. But today married actresses like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and you are doing well professionally as well. Isn’t this a healthy trend? Honestly, it’s complicated. I struggle every day in his industry. This is just a small thing.
When Sonam Kapoor spoke up on pay disparity
I’ve said no to three films in the last four years because I wasn’t getting paid what I deserve. Now, I’m doing films where I’m getting paid more than the hero. I’m not expecting the same as Akshay Kumar or Salman Khan. I’m not delusional. But I do know how much I deserve. All my films have opened well, so why shouldn’t I be paid more?
How motherhood impacted Sonam’s life
I think I’ve become a more rounded human being because I’ve tried to be a better person to set a good example for my son, and the only way to be a good mom or dad is to set the right moral compass for them by doing the right thing yourself and setting a good example, and I think that has really changed me, and I’m more vigilant about doing the right thing all the time.
Sonam Kapoor on the changing dynamics of women in the industry
I think the industry doesn’t have enough acceptance for moms. I don’t think it’s only the Indian film industry; every industry needs to have a little more empathy and openness to moms’ concerns. Just because you become a mother doesn’t mean that you have to stop working or that you will not be able to do a good job or devote a good amount of devotion to your job.
She spoke about her personal experiences and said, “I know that I wanted to take some time off because of the toll that giving birth takes on your body and taking care of a new human being takes on your mental, emotional, and physical health.”
Sonam empasises the importance of maternity leave
So, you need to take that maternity leave, and that should be the norm, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean that I’m not giving 100 percent to my job, and I hope that every industry understands that women are more capable than men of taking care of everything, including themselves, the child, and their work.
What are Sonam Kapoor’s favourite onscreen moms in pop-culture ?
Sridevi in Mom; I love Aunt May’s character in Spider-Man; I think Marisa Tomei did an amazing job; and Marge Simpson from The Simpsons.”
