Following her successful debut, Ameesha Patel appeared in several films, including Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) which became one of the highest-grossing films in Indian cinema. She gained popularity for her roles in movies like Humraaz, Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Race 2. Ameesha Patel is known for her charming on-screen presence and has worked in Hindi and some Telugu films.
Celebrating her birthday today, we are taking a throwback look at some of the most iconic fashion statements from her debut film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai
Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai was one of the biggest blockbuster films of the 2000s. The film, which was released in 2000, not only marked Hrithik Roshan’s debut but also featured Ameesha Patil’s immaculate fashion sense, which effortlessly enthralled the audience with her breathtaking looks and timeless opulence.
Ameesha’s character Sonia Saxena in the film was known for her impeccable fashion statements. In the film, Sonia is the daughter of a rich businessman, Vishal Saxena (Anupama Kher) and is seen to be wearing only silk and satins which are considered sophisticated.
Take an example of her birthday, from the song Chaand Sitare, where she wore the iconic white princess Anarkali salwar suit which made Sonia look more innocent and graceful.
Apart from traditional wear, Ameesha Patil’s character also showcased her flair for contemporary Western fashion. In the song, Pyaar Ki Kashti Mein, Ameesha wore two beach dresses, one being the cute but chic net purple dress and the other, the iconic leopard print bikini co-ord set.
For her purple attire, she paired her dress with matching hair clips and choker, giving her a girly cute look while as she changes into the bikini, it gives her fun cruise party vibes.
One of the most iconic looks would be from Janeman Janeman song, where she wore a pink pleated dress with a white crop top and pink tie-up shirt and this look was then preceded by the title track of the film where the skirt was even used as a flag by Rohit and Sonia as they get stranded on the island.
As the story moves forward with Rohit’s death, Sonia is seen being sad and this too changes her fashion style. She is more seen in traditional attire including fitted kurtas, covering dupattas and pastel colours.
Then in the song Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, as Rohit’s doppelganger, Raj falls in love with Sonia, she is still wearing Indian outfits but with more sensual appeal. There are now sparkling lehengas cholis with short blouses and no dupatta, as well as monotone lehengas in vivid colours with some silver jewellery to jazz it up.
As she comes back to India, she is yet again seen in her Western attire. Maybe this is there to show that now she is all healed and in love with Raj without realising it.
Ameesha Patil’s wardrobe in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai had a profound effect on Bollywood fashion. Her fusion of conventional and modernised attire resonated with the audience encouraging many fashion fans to emulate her fashion choices. Ameesha Patil became a fashion icon for young women who aspire to adopt both Indian and Western styles as a result of the success of the film.
