Bing: ChatGPT maker OpenAI disables Browse with Bing beta feature, here’s why – Times of India

ChatGPT maker OpenAI earlier this year introduced a feature that enabled users of the AI chatbot app to surf the web via Bing. The feature searched Bing for answers to user queries. But the company has now announced that it was disabling the beta integration to fix an issue.
“ChatGPT Browse with Bing is a beta feature (available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers) that allows ChatGPT to search the internet to help answer questions that benefit from recent information,” the company said in an update.
“We have learned that the ChatGPT Browse beta can occasionally display content in ways we don’t want,” the post added, explaining that if a user specifically asks for a URL’s full text, it might inadvertently fulfil this request.”As of July 3, 2023, we’ve disabled the Browse with Bing beta feature out of an abundance of caution while we fix this in order to do right by content owners. We are working to bring the beta back as quickly as possible, and appreciate your understanding!” the company added.
As mentioned, the ability was brought for the subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, which is the premium tier of the AI chatbot. Reportedly, users were able to get around the paywalls by using the ChatGPT’s Bing integration.

Significance of Browsing with Bing
According to the company, Browsing is useful in scenarios where queries related to current events and other information that “extend[s] beyond [ChatGPT’s] original training data.”
This means that Browsing allows the AI chatbot to get more accurate and recent data by searching the web.
It is to be noted that in case the Browsing feature is disabled, ChatGPT’s knowledge cuts off in 2021. For example, in case the browsing is disabled and when asked ChatGPT questions like “Who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament?” wouldn’t yield a correct response.
