Bill Sienkiewicz Reveals Facebook Removed His 2018 Anti-ComicsGate Post

Comic book legend Bill Sienkiewicz revealed that Facebook has removed his post from 2018 that criticized ComicsGate.

Comic book art legend Bill Sienkiewicz announced on his Facebook account that the social media web giant has recently decided that his 2018 post denouncing ComicsGate was against community standards and had been removed from the site due to its “profanity and bullying,” which Sienkiewicz believes misses the entire point of his message.

Sienkiewicz’s three-year-old post was in the news recently as people were sharing it again on social media in response to some current debates over the “ComicsGate” movement, which generally argues against what they feel is “forced diversification” of comic books. Critics of ComicsGate, like Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Jeff Lemire, feel that ComicsGate is effectively a group based around hate, as Lemire noted back in 2018, as well, “Comicsgate is based on fear, intolerance, bigotry and anger. The comics creators emerging today are too talented, too smart and too loud to be beaten by these weak people. It’s time we all started standing up for one another.”

Lemire and Sienkiewicz both took stands against ComicsGate back in 2018 in specific response to the treatment that Darwyn Cooke’s widow, Marsha Cooke, received in 2018 when she replied to somebody stating that, had he been alive, the late comic book great would have supported ComicsGate. Marsha Cooke explained, “Hi guys, this is Darwyn’s wife and I can guarantee he thought you comics gate idiots were a bunch of crybaby losers ruining comics. because you are.”

Cooke’s comments were obviously not well received by ComicsGate supporters, leading Lemire and Sienkiewicz and others to defend Cooke and denounce ComicsGate.

Sienkiewicz posted a long post on his Facebook account explaining his problems with ComicsGate:

What you’re each promoting individually is not some divine creative dispensation; it’s just you being an asshole. Collectively, you’re a gaggle, a clan,(-potentially with a k unsubtle as that shot may be)- a veritable bag’s worth of douches. Whatever the name you give for your assembly, you’re not the Avengers. You’re still just a bunch of assholes.

Comics isn’t a boys club. It’s not “NO (insert ethnic group, gender, religion, sexual preference here) ALLOWED.” It’s a club , a meeting place a forum for creators. Of all stripes. Like a real life Legion of Super Heroes, or a Justice League. Only with pen and ink paper and Cintiqs and laptops and…

Stop being the creepy racist misogynist uncles showing up at reunions and pissing in the punchbowl to disprove your beta standing. Stop being the weird cousins the entire world points to as the definition of every “comic book nerd” stereotype. Or do it far away from us. Stop being whiny misunderstood victims bitching bout favoritism, intolerance, and sexism. You’re slinging inky-black aspersions, obliviously crying racism in your Wite-Out™. You’re damned right some corrections need to be made; starting with the guys in the mirror first.

The 2018 post had been shared again recently, including by star comic book writer Gail Simone.

On Thursday, Sienkiewicz revealed that his three-year-old post had now been removed by Facebook, noting on his account, “Apparently my 2018 open letter to the Comicsgate crowd has received renewed attention…. It also now violates FB’s community standards against profanity and bullying. I REALLY think they missed the point.”
