Major Changes in ICSE 2024 Specimen Papers

This is breaking news! ICSE has taken a big step towards NEP-2020 implementation by uploading Specimen Papers for Class X for all subjects with major changes in questions type and pattern. Lots of indirect, inference and application of concepts type Questions are newly introduced.
In a Circular No PV/CIR/Ei/2024, dated June 13th, 2023, Gerry Arathoon announced that “CISCE plans to gradually familiarise teachers and students with questions that require understanding & application of concepts and critical thinking. The eventual goal is to enable students to go beyond rote-learning & memorisation of facts and move towards development of conceptual understanding.”
Following that, the specimen papers are now uploaded for March 2024 ICSE Class 10 board exams. Links to download official papers direct for each main subject are given below:
English Language (English Paper – 1)
Literature in English (English Paper – 2)
Mathematics
Physics (Science Paper – 1)
Chemistry (Science Paper – 2)
Biology (Science Paper – 3)
History and Civics (H.C.G. Paper – 1)
Geography (H.C.G. Paper – 2)
It is assumed that Educational Initiative (‘EI’ in circular) is roped in to help CISCE in forming these questions that are newly introduced in these specimen papers (similar to competency questions in CBSE Class 10). Freshly prepared resource material is also made available by Educart to help practice these new pattern questions for each subject, based on this new specimen papers.

Application-based Question asked in Physics 2024 Specimen Paper

“I am glad CISCE has decided to introduce critical thinking questions finally through this specimen paper”, said T S Sudhir, one of the most admired ICSE/ ISC Educators in India and founder of `Study with Sudhir’ YouTube channel. “It’s a small step but a necessary one to stimulate conceptual or application-based thinking through assessment, especially in Civics, Maths and Science subjects. The onus is now on teachers to include such Questions in their classroom teachings straight away.”
We have analysed the fundamental changes in 2024 exam paper and summarised for all teachers and students to easily understand:

  • In Biology, Chemistry and Physics, a new category of image-based case study questions of 3m are introduced in Section B. See Q1(xv) & Q5(v) in Biology or Q4(i) in Physics as an example.
  • In History & Civics, lots of image/ source-based MCQs and 10m questions are introduced that were not asked before. Example: Q1(x) or Q8.
  • Such questions in each Chapter are now added in the new 2024 Educart resource book for students to get started with practice along with their classroom learning.
  • In Mathematics, finally Assertion Reason (see Q1(xv)) and Statement combination type questions (see Q1(viii)) are introduced for the first time. They are also added in the Educart resource book.

New assertion-reason question being introduced now for the first time

  • Literature in English has received major changes as dialogue-based (Q1(iii & iv)), sequencing of events (Q1(ix)), character’s mood (Q1(xi)) and literary devices-type indirect questions are now being asked.

Majority of students and teachers are unaware of these changes, and students could be practising from the old paper pattern for these subjects. Students should seriously consider practising these new pattern questions for all subjects using these specimen papers and available resources such as Educart Books for 2024 Boards.
