Best time of day to use anti-ageing cream for maximum ‘benefit’

A regular skincare routine can help to maintain skin as we age, however having a specific plan about when you will use certain products can help to maximise the effects. Scott McGlynn, os a beauty and skincare influencer and host and creator of Celebrity Skin Talk and Acne Uncovered.

He spoke to Express.co.uk about his skincare routine recommendations. While there are a host of anti-ageing products available, there is one item, in particular, he recommends investing in.

Scott explained: “I always say use anti-ageing products in my evening skincare routine. Evening anti-ageing creams are richer.

“I know people who wear anti-ageing creams during the day and find them very oily and greasy. So my advice is only to do it in the evening.

“I always say do not use hot water when cleansing the face, lukewarm or even cold water is the best for the skin. It damages the skin barrier if you use hot water to cleanse your face.

“Apply your face product after a hot shower when your skin is still damp as your pores are open and the products sink into your skin more easily, therefore you get the whole benefit of the product.”

While night creams have excellent benefits for the skin, this doesn’t mean skipping out on using skin-protecting products during the day.

While day moisturisers are a great option, keeping your skin healthy during your waking hours is a lot more simple. Scott explained: “During the day definitely wear SPF 30 or 50 in the day as the sun exposure is very ageing.”

Ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate into the skin where they then damage the elastic fibres which keep the skin firm, allowing wrinkles to develop. Sunlight can also lead to other signs of ageing, such as age spots or “liver spots” on the hands, face, neck and other sun-exposed areas.

The number of wrinkles a person has, and how prominent they are, is often linked with their lifetime sun exposure. Therefore, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen can help to eliminate some of this risk.

If you want to take things a step further, Scott says a professional facial can have huge benefits. He explained: “I invest in a facial once a month or every two months for a deep cleanse.

“This helps get rid of the dead skin cells and leaves my skin more radiant, fresh and glowing. It’s important to continue [your skincare routine] at home day and night.”

Scott recently detailed his favourite cheap anti-ageing cream, which could save shoppers over £60.

Scott claimed the Lidl Cein cream, retailing at £1.49 is just as good as a popular £69 cream on the market.

Lidl sells both a day and night version of its Cien Q10 face cream. The day cream contains hyaluronic acid to help “protect skin cells and reduce the appearance of deep-set wrinkles.”

Scott said: “In fact the Lidl cream went further and my skin felt more moisturised.”
