Best automatic cars from BMW to Toyota
A CAR expert has revealed the best automatic cars on the market, but they don’t come cheap.
When automatic cars first entered the market, many drivers thought that an auto ‘box was taking away control of their motor.
However, most drivers now prefer an automatic car because it makes it easier to focus on speed and road position – and they can keep both hands on the wheel as they don’t have to change gears.
Engineering and technology around the slick shifting models has moved on a few notches, too.
Handily, car experts at Auto Express have revealed the top ten automatic cars.
1. BMW 3 Series £37,855
Car experts say it’s difficult to pick up holes the in the recently facelifted model, which loses the option of a manual gearbox in favour of an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF.
The gearbox is refined and preempts your driving exceptionally well, smoothly shuffling into the right gear when needed.
2. Porsche 911 £97,000
The Porsche 911 needs no introduction, having been in production for more than 50 years.
They say that it’s almost surreal how quickly the 992-generation car can flick through gears – pulling a paddle provides a seamless upshift or a perfectly blipped downshift to keep the turbocharged flat-six motor in its sweet spot.
The most recent 911 is larger than any previous model, but it does an excellent job taking on twisty B roads without any trouble.
3. Mercedes S-Class £115,995
The Mercedes S-Class is precisely the type of car that an automatic gearbox was initially intended for.
Full of luxury and often found with a chauffeur driving up front, the S-Class is meant to waft round with as little fuss as possible.
The latest S-Class is soothing and brimming with tech, not least its hyper-advanced nine-speed automatic gearbox.
4. Toyota Corolla £29,289
The 12th-generation Toyota Corolla has been quietly impressive since it went on sale in 2019.
And its sophisticated TNGA platform, peerless reliability and fuel-sipping efficiency make it one of the best automatic cars on the market.
5. Renault Clio E-Tech £23,995
The E-Tech uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is supplemented by two electric motors and drives through an innovative clutchless automatic gearbox.
The Clio pulls away on electric power alone, with the engine firing up above town speeds when more grunt is required.
A car expert also revealed the best first cars for new drivers – and there’re 10 to choose from under £20,000.
Plus, a car expert came up with a list of the best seven-seaters cars on the market.
