Before Galactus: The Silver Surfer Just Met Marvel’s First World-Eater

Silver Surfer and the Defenders have just been transported to the birthplace of Galactus. where they found an even more menacing Devourer of Worlds.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Defenders #1, available now from Marvel.

The Defenders may have just reassembled, but they’re already facing off against a threat that’s even older than the Marvel Universe itself. After using uncontrollable magic to bring together the latest iteration of the Defenders, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer and their team were transported through time and space.

And at the end of Defenders #1 by Al Ewing, Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, the Defenders find themselves on Taa, the homeworld of Galactus from the last incarnation of the Marvel Multiverse. While Galactus might be the Devourer of Worlds in the main Marvel Universe, these Marvel heroes just encountered Omnimax, who is in the midst of destroying Galactus’ home.

Defenders Omnimax

Thanks to an unexpected visit from the Masked Raider, Doctor Strange learned that the Enclave’s mad scientist Carlo Zota using time magic, Strange looked to the Tarot of the Secret Flame to summon the best team for the job. The wild magic of the tarot proved more than capable of bringing the necessary heroes together, but the unfortunate side effect of doing so also sent them hurtling through a portal to parts unknown.

When the Defenders have come to from their mystical journey, they wake up on an alien world in the midst of a cataclysmic event. As the heroes lay on the street, a soldier walks past and berates them for not taking part in the evacuation effort. It takes a moment for the Silver Surfer to realize just what she is saying to them, but it quickly sinks in that they are currently on the planet Taa. As Galactus’ most famous Herald, Surfer is well acquainted with the planet, which was lost before Galactus became the sole survivor of his native Multiverse. And as the preview for the next issue suggests, they were being berated by Galactus’ mom.

Like so many other things in the Marvel Universe, the nature of the Multiverse is a cyclical one that goes through a period of expansion and contraction. When this contraction finally reduces a Multiverse to its “Cosmic Egg” state, it eventually dies off in the birth of the next one. While the Marvel Universe as we know it is the Seventh Cosmos, the Defenders currently find themselves in the Sixth, and Galactus’ predecessor is currently in the midst of destroying it as they arrive.

The appearance of Omnimax does raise some particularly interesting questions about Galactus’ life as Galan before his transformation, especially considering the origin already established for him as an explorer from Taa who traveled into the Cosmic Egg of his own time in the hopes of finding some means of saving his world. Now that there is Omnimax in play, the history of Taa as it has been known for decades may be up in the air entirely.

Galactus and Omnimax aren’t the only planet-devouring beings that the Marvel Universe has seen, but the latter’s impossibly close resemblance to the former opens the door for there to be far more to Galan’s transformation than fans already know.
