Beech Tree Place Regeneration by Alex Gordon, Sutton Grammar
Beech Tree Place was built in the mid-1950s and was housing designated for older people over the age of 55. It is now being demolished for regeneration, and so residents have been temporarily relocated.
The original budget of £30 million has been increased to £44.2 million for the 92 new homes planned. Sutton Council’s regeneration aims to create homes that are: high quality, sustainable and 100% affordable. They plan to create a series of four detailed mansion blocks, which will house 92 homes, including 1 and 2 bedroom flats along with 3 bedroom maisonettes.
A meeting was held with St. Nicholas Church to discuss how the regeneration team can assist the church with developing a new sensory garden. To start the church off, the existing plants from Beech Tree Place have been donated to them. A meeting was also held with Sutton’s Employment Skills Project Manager as well, and a resource programme that outlines available job opportunities on the construction site. A final programme will be finalised and presented to the local schools and colleges in the area.
Linda Paisly, Vice President of Beech Tree Place Residents’ Steering Group, said in an information video filmed by Sutton Council in 2022: “The buildings, which were built about 1950, are very, very cold in the winter and conversely they’re very, very hot in the summer. So although we love them as our homes, they’re far from perfect.”
