Beast Wars Just Set Up a New Shocking Transformers Traitor

Transformers: Beast Wars #9 may quite possibly be setting the stage for one of Megatron’s Predacons to defect and join the heroic Maximals.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Beast Wars #9, on sale now from IDW Publishing.

Beast Wars has featured quite a few heel turns and alliance changes over the course of the classic animated series, and things are no different in the IDW comic book series. Dinobot, as in the show, has already made his jump from the Predacons to the side of the Maximals, but he may not be the only one to leave Megatron’s ranks. Skold has been somewhat of a background character so far, but this changes in the series’ new issue, to the chagrin of Megatron’s cause.

Skold’s new friendship with the Maximal Razorbeast sees her question her ties to the Predacons, which is further complicated by her past mistreatment. This not only develops Skold’s character, but further showcases why the Predacons are so hateful toward the Maximals in the Beast Era.

How Skold Joined the Predacons

In a flashback, Skold is shown as having wanted to be an artist in her youth. Unfortunately, this dream is cut short due to the bullying of three Maximals, who demean her because of her status as a Predacon. According to them, her kind could not appreciate art, let alone create it, and she was far better suited for manual labor or a violent career. Galavar, the future Beast Megatron, relates to her sadness and recruits her to his growing Predacon cause that’s based out of the constant mistreatment of their kind at the hands of the Maximals.

This makes Megatron somewhat similar to Magneto from X-Men, with the Predacons being his equivalent of the Brotherhood of Mutants that fight against persecution from humans. Likewise, this treatment backs up Megatron’s claims in both the comic book and the animated series that the Maximals oppressed the Predacons, forcing them into ghettos and poor living conditions. Her less than accepted upbringing explains why Skold joined up with the Predacons despite seeming fairly nice, but her true disposition may see her switching sides.

Why Skold May Join the Maximals

Despite her best attempts to go along with the crowd, Skold fails to fit in with the other Predacons, with new recruit Blackarachnia outright rejecting an attempt to befriend her. This sees Skold go off on her own to gather her thoughts, leading to her finding a stasis pod. Out of it comes the Maximal Razorbeast, who thanks Skold for pulling his pod out of a body of water. She’s shocked at his friendliness and quickness to count her as an ally, and it’s this fierce loyalty that sees him get severely damaged in battle against Iron Wolves to protect Skold.

Skold takes Razorbeast to the Maximals in hopes that they can take care of him. Dinobot then offers Skold the chance to defect from the Predacons like he did. He notices how much better she’s doing when not surrounded by negativity, and he had previously asked her to join him when he first left Megatron’s team. This further suggests that she would be much more at home as one of the Maximals, with her relationships with both Dinobot and Razorbeast possibly providing the push she needs to leave the Predacons. This would swing things in the Maximals favor, which they definitely need after the villainous Blackarachnia reprogrammed most of the protoforms into being Predacons. By following in Dinobot’s footsteps, Skold may learn that her previous mistreatment at the hands of the Maximals really is a thing of the past.
