BBC presenter Evan Davis has heartbreakingly revealed he found out about the death of his father on his wedding day.

The Dragons’ Den narrator, 61, revealed he received a text from his brother shortly after his marriage ceremony with his husband last July.

After reading the ‘Call ASAP’ message, he rung his brother during the wedding reception, where he learnt his father had taken his own life.

Making a speech to their guests, Evan recalled saying: ‘We’ve just had some news. My father’s died.’

However, he didn’t want his guests to be ‘alarmed’, as he continued to The Times: ‘But I don’t want you to be alarmed. He was very elderly and it was definitely time.

‘He had a wonderful, long and happy life. And he was definitely ready to go.

‘There’s actually nothing we can do. So I’m going to propose that we carry on.’

He went on to say that he was ‘absolutely’ certain he wanted his guests to know that his dad had taken his own life, saying, ‘Dad was not ashamed of it,’ and nor was he.

The Radio 4 presenter, who keeps his private life out of the spotlight, devastatingly shared his father’s suicide note in the interview, in which he had written: ‘I am not unhappy or depressed. I go because I have decided that I am now ready to go.’

Just a day later, Evan returned to work at the BBC where he ‘burst into tears’ when asked about his wedding day.

Recalling the timing of his father’s death, Evan told the publication: ‘I know he didn’t do it to spoil our day.’

He added: ‘We are all just very proud of him. His last act was one of a very controlled, strong person. It takes a lot of will to do what he did.’
