Psycho Pirate is revealed to be behind Arkham Tower’s miracles, but this was enabled by the facility borrowing a Ghostbusters plot device.
In Detective Comics, to boost Psycho Pirates’ mind-controlling powers, Arkham Tower was constructed in a way reminiscent of 1984’s Ghostbusters.
The fan-favorite film saw Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) live in the 550 Central Park West apartment building in New York City. Nicknamed “Spook Central” by Ghostbuster Ray Stantz, the crew uncovered that the building was constructed with elements of pure selenium to be a “superconductive antennae” for “spiritual turbulence.” While Psycho Pirate/Roger Hayden doesn’t control ghosts, a preview for Detective Comics #1056 — written by Mariko Tamaki with art by Amancay Nahuelpan — reveals that Arkham Tower was constructed specifically in a way that would allow him to control the whole building, turning it into an antennae as well.
It seems that Psycho Pirate has lost the upgrade he received from serving as the right hand of Darkseid in Infinite Frontier, being that he needs a specially-constructed building to amplify his powers further. In the miniseries, Hayden ditched his classic costume for new black and white threads, which he wore as he recruited others from across the Multiverse to Darkseid’s cause. At the end of Infinite Frontier, he disappeared saying that he was “needed in another event,” which appears to be Detective Comics‘ “Shadows of the Bat” arc.
The current arc explores the new Arkham Tower and how its promises of being a better Arkham Asylum were all lies. Instead, its front man, Tobias Wear, orchestrated its miraculous treatments — with Psycho Pirate’s help — to trick Gotham City Mayor Nakano into providing the facility with funding, which Wear and Hayden would then pocket and get out of Dodge. However, Arkham Tower didn’t boost Hayden’s powers enough, being that the facility was plunged into chaos once he finally lost control over its patients — including some of Gotham’s worst criminals.
Arkham Tower currently houses major villains like Mr. Freeze, but one of its worst just took over the facility in an attempt at revenge: Scarecrow. This past Fall, Scarecrow turned Gotham into a horrifying hellscape during Batman‘s “Fear State” crossover event. Scarecrow was last seen in Batman: Fear State Omega #1, the conclusion to the event, with the caped crusader dropping the villain off at the new facility. Though he was working on a massive con, Psycho Pirate appears to have turned good for the moment, hiding Mayor Nakano’s wife from Scarecrow and the other patients.

Detective Comics #1056 is written by Tamaki with art by Nahuelpan, colors by Jordie Bellaire, letters by Ariana Maher and main cover art by Irvin Rodriguez. Variant covers for the issue were created by Lee Bermejo and Jorge Fornés. The issue also features the next chapter in the “House of Gotham” backup story, written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Fernando Blanco. The issue goes on sale March 8 from DC Comics.
