Batman Just Revealed His Biggest Secret to a Surprising DC Character
Batman: Urban Legends #14 features Batman revealing his true identity to a visiting vigilante who is convinced that Bruce Wayne is corrupt.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the story “Right Answer, Wrong Question” from Batman: Urban Legends #14, on sale now from DC Comics.
Batman: Urban Legends #14 features Bruce Wayne trusting Vic Sage — better known as the Question — with his secret identity.
The surprising reveal occurs in the short story “Right Answer, Wrong Question,” written by Ryan Cady and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Cam Smith. The tale details an early meeting between the Question and Batman as the pair investigates unusual financial loopholes in Wayne Enterprises’ business dealings. Vic is convinced that Bruce Wayne is crooked, calling the billionaire’s company “as corrupt as a three-dollar bill.” When Batman points out that he trusts Wayne — without revealing his secret — Vic refuses to take him at face value.
The two vigilantes end up infiltrating Wayne Enterprises together. While the entire exercise might appear like an elaborate act on Batman’s part, it is soon revealed that several guards employed by the company are up to no good. After a furious Vic Sage demands to know why Batman already knows so much about the inner workings of Wayne Enterprises, the Dark Knight has no other option but to remove his mask. When the Question sees that Batman and Bruce are one and the same, all he can say is: “Huh. Checks out.”
The remainder of the story sees both heroes working together to defeat the corrupt guards. On the final page, Batman tells Vic to leave Bruce Wayne out of his future investigations in Gotham, and Vic writes down on a notepad: “Batman is Bruce Wayne…and he can be trusted!!”
“Right Answer, Wrong Question” is a story that fills in the gaps after the first meeting between Batman and Vic Sage, all the way back in 1987’s The Question, written by Denny O’Neil and penciled Denys Cowan. In the first two issues of the series, Vic worked a crime only to find himself pummeled by thugs and thrown off a harbor wharf. Batman visited him in the hospital and sharpy admonished his methods, calling him an “arrogant, incompetent dilettante” who blundered into crimefighting without purpose or proper training in investigative work. Batman’s opinion of the Question seems to have grown in the intervening years, and “Right Answer, Wrong Question” ends with Bruce acknowledging that Vic isn’t just a thrill-seeker, but has grown into a “good detective.”
