BA to bring back free tea and coffee for some passengers after backlash
British Airways economy customers will once again be able to enjoy free tea and coffee on some flights for the first time in six years, the company has announced.
Complimentary hot drinks were axed back in 2017 as part of a money-saving effort, in a move that angered customers, who saw it as a degrading of the service and a step in the direction of low-cost companies such as Ryanair and EasyJet.
Chief executive Sean Doyle told staff the company is aiming “to surprise and delight customers” in a message first reported in the Sunday Times.
“What’s more delightfully British than a cup of tea? We’re looking at introducing this on some of our longer short-haul routes,” he continued.
Not all customers of the company will be offered complimentary drinks, however, since the offer will only apply to economy customers on longer short-haul flights, such as those to Cairo in Egypt or Amman in Jordan, which takes approximately five hours to complete.
Passengers travelling for shorter distances will not benefit from the policy, and will have to continue to buy their drinks, similarly to what they’ve been doing for the past six years.
The company’s intention to bring back some of the free refreshments was first hinted at during the pandemic, in an attempt to seduce customers after two years of travel restrictions and an extremely difficult time for the airline industry.
As a result, BA decided to bring back some of the perks to welcome customers back after the lifting of restrictions. This was described as a temporary measure with a view to “rebuild and re-energise our airline” and reinforce the company’s “personal commitment” to “build a better British Airways”, Mr Doyle said at the time.
Following up on his promise to reinforce the company’s image as “premium in everything we do”, complimentary drinks are once again a feature of the BA experience on longer short-distance flights.
