Tonight’s cancelled episode of Celebrity MasterChef would have seen the contestants celebrating the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen died peacefully at the age of 96 in Balmoral, ending her remarkable reign of more than 70 years on the throne.

BBC One suspended its regular programming following news this afternoon that her majesty was under medical supervision.

The corporation interrupted Bargain Hunt at 12.39 to deliver the statement from Buckingham Palace which said royal doctors were concerned for health.

It has since aired rolling news coverage with Huw Edwards breaking the news that the Queen had died.

Thursday’s axed episode of Celebrity MasterChef would have seen former Great British Bake Off judge Dame Mary Berry task the seven remaining contestants to recreate one of her favourite recipes.

In the postponed episode, the celebrities have to use unfamiliar ingredients in order to try and impress judges John Torode, Gregg Wallace and Mary.

The last round sees the group challenged with cooking a dish dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen in celebration of this year’s Platinum Jubilee.

It is not yet known when the semi-final episode of Celebrity MasterChef will air.

At present, viewers tuning into BBC Three and BBC Four are met with a holding card that explains programmes have been suspended.

‘Programmes are suspended for a major news story,’ it reads. ‘Please switch over to BBC One.’

ITV has also suspended its planned programming and will broadcast continuous news coverage throughout the evening, celebrating the Queen’s life, looking back at her reign and her decades of service to the country.

There will be a special ITV News At Ten, followed by an hour-long obituary programme narrated by Mary Nightingale, at 11pm.
